Katharine

Named for a dear friend, the Katharine knocker is a 21st-century interpretation of a door decoration that can be traced back to ancient Mesopotamia. Rich in spiritual significance, the cast female hand with its delicate digits and refined jewels, provides symbolic protection, warding off evil spirits and safeguarding those within. In the Middle East, It is called the Hand of Fatima, referring to the prophet Mohammed’s benevolent daughter, the Hand of Mary on doors in Christian homes, and it is attributed to Miriam in Jewish communities. Her five fingers may reference the five pillars of Islam or the five books of the Torah. The fingers often hold a fruit, underscoring the fertile nature of the knocker and perhaps referencing the forbidden fruit of the Garden of Eden. In the last few centuries, the elegant hand has settled on the front doors of Europe’s most stylish cities. Her muscled, sure grip reflects the story of womanhood, balancing grace and beauty with devotion and might.
