Charlotte

From a visual standpoint, the design depicts a Regency dolphin, a motif that adorns pieces of furniture created during that early 19th-century period in England. More robust than the decorative elements of the Georgian style that preceded it, the Regency found inspiration in Egyptian imagery and oceanic motifs that referenced the sea battles between the armies of England’s Lord Admiral Nelson and Napoleon. The name came thanks to a young child named Charlotte, the fierce and tender daughter of a bronze casting instructor at the Penland School of Craft in North Carolina. She marveled at Luna moths during evening workshops and cradled them as they died the next morning. Charlotte reflects the intense connection to and brave reverence for the world’s most wondrous mysteries.
