Marguerite

In 1889, milliner and couturier Jeanne Lanvin opened a small shop in Paris, the origin of what is now considered to be the oldest modern fashion house. Her foresight as a 19th-century career woman was fueled by the relationship with her daughter, Marguerite, beginning with the sewing of her clothes. In her role as mother, business woman, and couture icon, she defied convention and articulated a style that is still revered today. The door knocker’s design was inspired by a gilded parrot in the reconstructed bedroom of their Paris apartment which was transported to the Musee des Arts Decoratifs. As observed by turn-of-the-century French writer Louise de Vilmorin, "By first dazzling her daughter, little by little, she will dazzle the world.”
