Eleanor

When Eleanor of Toledo wed the Italian Duke of Florence Cosimo de Medici in 1538, she was just 17. But the Spanish noble was wise beyond her years, making shrewd business and political decisions, on her own and as her husband’s trusted advisor, as well as forging an indelible imprint on the decorative legacy of one of the most celebrated families of the Western world. Steadfastly Spanish despite the xenophobia among her Italian subjects and compatriots, her power was resolute. Her legacy, enduring. Eleanor’s door knocker design source can be found in her portrait that hangs in Florence’s Uffizi Gallery. She wears a brocade dress whose center piece is a pomegranate. The stylized fruit symbol represents fertility, strength, enduring style, and tenacity.
