Agatha

Known as the patron saint of breast cancer patients and sexual assault victims, Agatha’s story began in 251 AD in Sicily.  Having taken a vow of celibacy in devotion to God, the beautiful fifteen-year-old girl refused the advances of a Roman prefect. In response, he forced her into a brothel, where she suffered a month of rape and torture; her breasts severed.  The saint and martyr, whose commitment never waivered, is depicted throughout art history bandaged and holding her breast on a plate, reflecting history’s cavalier, misogynistic treatment of women. Referencing a Pre-Columbian breastplate designed to protect female warriors, this doorknocker celebrates women of strength and conviction while paying tribute to the transcendent power of the female.
